Proposals for a new Art Gallery are designed to connect life on the land, water and wetlands beyond. A new pier creates a public realm and generous arrival space which provides access to the sloped roof of the building, further connecting the land, water and nature reserve beyond. The new public realm contains new viewing points and spaces for gathering.
Arrival at the gallery is through a colonnade helps form a legible entrance for visitors, orientation space and reception. This orientation space provides convenient access to gallery, cafe and retail spaces as well as views of the changing landscape beyond.
Gallery spaces throughout the building possess different qualities of natural light and volume, permitting a variety of artistic mediums to be displayed. The gallery spaces were designed to enable the display of artworks of national stature aligned with the guidance of the collection trust.
The cafe at the end of the building's circulation spine provides an opportunity to pause, and absorb the generous views of the surrounding water and links to a covered external dining space.
