Remodelling and expansion of a crucial community space

Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre
INCH were commissioned by Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre to work with the local community, investigating design solutions which worked with their aspiration and vision to improve this key community facility.
INCH have worked closely with the building users to understand the operation of the centre, and the opportunities which the existing building offers, testing options for community feedback and refining the design over extended early feasibility studies.
The final design revolves around improved use of circulation space, which adjusts access to area within the existing building envelope, greatly improving flexibility and ability to run simultaneous events, while keeping the capital cost within limits of potential funding avenues.
The building contains café, meeting and work space for rent, Flexible event space/s, Creche, training kitchen, Office space and IT training space, all with associated external spaces which will be improved as part of the project.
Careful placement of structural works and creation of new openings, in conjunction with refreshed building cladding increases the ability to see in and out of the public spaces, activating the building, flooding the main public spaces with light, seeking to encourage higher footfall and use of the space. Essential energy and thermal improvements will be carried out.
