Catrine Games Hall

Expanding an existing leisure centre

Catrine Games Hall is an existing sports facility that is a vital community asset promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, social inclusion and community engagement in the local area. Alongside sporting activities, the building functions as a space for community meetings, vaccinations, parties, election voting and other community activities. The client is looking to enhance the current facilities and improve accessibility to ensure it is fully accessible for its wide programme of uses.

The existing building offers minimal engagement to the street and wider context with small windows and an uncelebrated entrance. Internally there is a large double-height games hall with cellular accommodation forming a single-height element.

The brief included gym facilities, spin bike room, community meeting room and rationalisation of their existing ancillary accommodation.  Responding to the site conditions we have proposed a new extension facing the main road, offering the opportunity for an active frontage and distinct entrance providing a clear arrival point for visitors. The new entrance refocuses the building helping to minimise circulation and increase clarity of wayfinding through the building.  The building offers the flexibility of out of hours use of the gym to help the community maximise its use.
