Shared Equity Housing

A socio-economic exploration of the viability of alternative housing models for older people in Scotland

INCH were awarded funding through Reshaping Care for Older People (RCOP) in North Lanarkshire to undertake a study into the options that may be available to support the development of shared equity and other alternative forms of housing and support for older people. The study was commissioned against a backcloth of significant policy and service development that reflects the commitment towards “shifting the balance of care for older people”. This study considers what options there may be for alternative models of housing and support in North Lanarkshire.

The specific requirements of the study have included the following:
• Strategic fit to the RCOP in North Lanarkshire
• Demand for untraditional social rented housing/ other forms of tenure with support provision
• The levels of support needs amongst the group interested in such tenure options
• The form such housing would need to take in terms of physical design
• The form that support would need to take to meet needs
• The affordability of such a model of housing and support, including a cost assessment of the physical units and funding opportunities / income streams
