The Western Baths Club

‘Sulis’ the Celtic goddess of healing and sacred waters was originally a solardeity. Her name is a derivative of the Celtic word “Sul” for “sun” and “eye”, and Suilead, meaning wisdom. This Celtic connection to therapeutic waters and light encaptures the unique condition of the Western Baths Club - an iconic space within the West End of Glasgow, historically respected locally and internationally among those who recognise the therapeutic benefits of exercise, relaxation and bathing.

It is this historic grounding in wellness that has informed our proposals, envisaging a building where members can escape the pressures of the world outside, in surroundings that enhance the sense of relaxation, calm and wellbeing. From the point of arrival, the building is opened up, with a rich palette of quality materials, drawing on the existing colours and details of the historic interiors, creating an ambience worthy of the bath’s status.

The new wellness suite elevates the offering to its members with an immersive thermal bathing experience. From the marble centrepiece of the original plunge pool, through different temperature spaces and baths, finishing on the upper floor beneath the fine timber roof with views of the sky and roof garden, members have the opportunity to fully relax and unwind in a unique setting that combines the history and future of the Western Baths Club.
